Nestled in the heart of whitewater rafting country, Hawks Nest State Park encompasses 276 acres bordering a rugged section of the New River Gorge National River. Long known for its panoramic views, the park offers a modern , 31 room lodge for the comfort of overnight guests. Suites are available at an additional cost. Below the lodge, the New River forms peaceful Hawks Nest Lake. Above the lake, the narrow canyon and rushing water create one the most challenging wildwater boating waterways in the nation. From the lodge, visitors are treated to spectacular views of the lake, marina, New River Gorge Bridge and the exciting aerial tramway which serves the lakeside recreational facilities. Paddle boats are available for rent at the marina, and picnic facilities are adjacent for guests' convenience . For a special photo opportunity of the New River Gorge and the world's longest single arch span bridge, ride the exhilarating jetboat. Check with the park for schedule. Many of the guest rooms' private outdoor balconies command a view of the gorge and lake, while others overlook the outdoor swimming pool which is provided for the lodge guests in season. Tennis and game courts are also conveniently located nearby. The dining room provides panoramic, canyon views and features regional home cooking in a casual setting. Conference and banquet rooms in the lodge offer unique accommodations for corporate and group meetings up to 60 people. In addition, a complete gift shop features a variety of handmade West Virginia glass and craft items. In the park's historic section, high above the canyon and main overlook, is the park's museum. Constructed by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s, the rustic log building offers displays of Indian and pioneer artifacts. Admission is free. The park's main overlook snack bar, souvenir stand and picnicking facilities round out the accommodations in this area of the park. Whether you're searching for an ideal summer vacation, access to exciting whitewater or a quick getaway to view autumn's color symphony. Hawks Nest is a perfect year-round sanctuary from urban cares. Lodge Reservations may be made by writing or calling Hawks Nest directly, or by dialing 1-800-CALL- WVA and asking for Hawks Nest. This toll free line may be used in West Virginia, any state in the continental U.S. or Canadian province in the Eastern Time zone. A deposit of the first night's charge is required to hold any lodge room. If you make your reservations by telephone, you will have 10 days in which to make a payment unless it is a last minute reservation. In case of cancellations, deposits will be returned if notice is given at least 48 hours in advance. No pets are allowed in lodge rooms. Check in time is 3:00 p.m., with check-out 12:00 noon. Hawks Nest Lodge is open tear round, and reservations are suggested at all times. They may be made up to a year in advance and secured with Visa, MasterCard, American Express or Diner Club. Group rates are availible upon request. Hawks Nest Canyon Tramway The aerial tramway from Hawks Nest Lodge to the marina at the bottom of the New River Gorge is operated on weekends (Sat & Sun) through the month of May to Memorial Day, then daily until Labor Day, then weekends (Sat & Sun) through September, and daily through the last weekend in October. Tram hours: weekdays, 11 a.m.- 4:45 p.m.; weekends 11a.m.- 6:45 p.m. The tram is closed Mondays (except holidays) Hawks Nest Museum The rustic museum and nearby snack bar are open to the public from April 1 to November 1 (Hours vary with the season.)
